Facilities Operations Engineer

Imagine your next project driving equipment excellence and operational reliability at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Leiden.

As a Facilities Operations Engineer, you will shift away from pure design to become the operational backbone of our site. You will supervise and direct all aspects of the operation, maintenance, repairs, and improvements to our buildings and services. This hands-on role ensures our facility, utility systems, and machinery run safely, efficiently, and in absolute compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) regulations.

roles and responsibilities 

You will lead daily facilities maintenance and utility operations while upholding strict quality standards.

This will involve:

• Monitors safety and environmental operations to meet requirements for the site.

• Assists in the completion of safety and environmental action plan updates.

• Leads the manufacturing equipment excellence program.

• Researches and monitors best practices, factors performance metrics, and guides engineers in inventory and cost management.

• Ensures preventive maintenance of building utilities and machinery, manufacturing systems, mechanical and electromechanical equipment, and provides complex laboratory support.

• Administers major facilities and maintenance projects.

• Recommends estimates for base design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs.

• Oversees construction and installation and stays up-to-date on established codes, corporate requirements, specifications, and schedules.

• Guides and provides example-based leadership to engineering staff.

• Researches energy-saving projects, determines payback periods, and manages energy projects to completion.

• Manages Facilities and Facilities services according to GxP and EHS regulatory requirements; assures change implementation complies with local and federal regulations.

• Identifies issues and risks that can cause failure to comply with any EHS and quality regulatory requirement, downtime, or impact the financial plan, providing alternatives to mitigate risks.

• Ensures compliance with environmental legal requirements; manages EHS and Quality improvement plans as per the site CAPA system.

how to succeed 

To succeed in this role, you bring a robust operational engineering background paired with a deep understanding of maintenance, safety, and quality compliance in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

You will also bring:

• Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with +- 5 to 7 years of experience, preferably with a Technical or Facilities background.

• Strong technical skills in EHS&S, Quality Management, and facilities engineering/maintenance operations.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to write and speak fluently in English.

• Strong troubleshooting skills for Facilities services and systems, including GMP and non-GMP utilities.

• Proven capability in supervising contractors, tracking performance metrics, and managing project budgets/cost estimations.

• Master of Science (MS) or MBA is helpful but not required.

• Professional Engineer (PE) Certificate is an asset.

• Flexibility and a service-minded approach to support other departments or projects according to business needs.
