Senior Safety Specialist – Engineering & Maintenance


Location: Leiden, Newtonweg

Duration: 12 months

Hours: 40 hours per week, on-site

roles and responsibilities

  • You collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to understand the execution plan, where you leverage your expertise to ensure that the EHS requirements are accounted for both during preparation as well as during the execution of the project. 

  • Act as the primary contact for project stakeholders (engineers, clients, contractors).

  • Lead and coordinate workers and subcontractors to ensure safe, quality execution.

  • Supervise daily construction activities, ensuring alignment with plans and schedules.

  • Monitor work quality, resolve issues, and ensure adherence to technical and safety standards.

  • Identify and resolve construction challenges to maintain workflow continuity.

  • Coach and develop EVM team members to strengthen safety culture.

  • Develop and deliver safety trainings to workers and contractors.

  • Oversee, develop, and improve safety systems, standards, and procedures.

  • Lead or support the implementation of safety standards within your expertise.

  • Enforce safety regulations on site, conduct inspections, and ensure full compliance.

  • Perform safety-related risk assessments and support project safety assessments.

  • Participate in internal and external audits (e.g., ISO 14001, regulatory, corporate).

  • Lead or participate in incident investigations and drive corrective actions.


how to succeed

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • A minimum of 7+ years in the field of construction management, civil engineering, or a related field 

  • Experience with international Management System Standards like ISO14001

  • You are experienced in working in complex organizations with multiple levels during times of change

  • Able to connect to the business and able to understand the business needs

  • Strong communicator who is credible and self-assured

  • Additional course secondary safety expert (“MVK”) or comparable can lead to preference

  • Proficient in both spoken and written Dutch and English
