Sr Scientist (AMCI)

  • Location: Belgium

  • Duration of the contract: Until Nov 30, 2027

  • Hours per week: 40 per week | Contract: Temporary Employee (Payroll only / No B2B / No Freelancers)

Imagine your next project leading global analytical investigations for the Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) organization of J&J Innovative Medicine.

In this role, you will perform advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical powders and particles, acting as a crucial link between the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and Drug Products (DP) teams to enhance the development of solid dosage forms.

roles and responsibilities

As a Sr Scientist (AMCI), you will drive both hands-on lab experiments and strategic evaluations of novel characterization workflows.

This will involve:

  • Conducting hands-on experiments in the lab to characterize (in depth) particle and powder properties of active ingredients, excipients, drug product intermediates (e.g. pre-blends, granulates and final blends) of solid dosage forms. This includes particle size/shape determination and flowablity assessments.

  • Designing, setting up and performing experiments in the lab, ensuring integration of the results, and meeting project deliverables.

  • Collaborating closely on the interface between Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and Drug Products (DP) teams to enhance product development for solids formulations.

  • Continuously evaluating analytical characterization strategies to provide the best support possible to the project teams in CMC development.

  • Supporting internal innovation projects with respect to characterization approaches and workflows. This includes the assessment of novel characterisation techniques and modelling.

  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, GMP and safety.

  • Staying up to date with the scientific literature in the pharmaceutical analysis field.

how to succeed

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist—ideally a fresh PhD graduate with highly relevant subject matter expertise—who is ready to translate their deep academic research domain knowledge into industrial pharmaceutical development.

You will also bring:

  • PhD in Chemical (Bio)Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, or equivalent by experience in a relevant area.

  • Strong Subject Matter Expertise (SME) and background in pharmaceutical development.

  • Hands-on lab experience with Laser Diffraction, powder rheology, and powder shear testing.

  • Profound understanding of the relation of particle properties to bulk behavior and processability of materials up to product quality level.

  • Good knowledge on statistical methodologies, such as PCA/PLS.

  • Good project management skills and communication skills (oral and written) allowing effective interactions with all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledge on additional characterisation techniques such as tribo-electrification, specific surface area and particle imaging is a plus.

  • Background in big data analysis, advanced modelling techniques or lab automation is a plus.
