Automation Engineer 

Location: Leiden, Netherlands 

Duration of the contract: 12 months (4 days onsite, 1 day home office)

Hours per week: 40 hours

Essential: Previous expertise in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and operations technology, including hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV, coupled with a mandatory track record in operations within highly regulated GMP environments like the pharmaceutical, medical device, or biotechnology sectors.

The heart of our production in Leiden is in our bioreactors, where large molecule medicines are produced and subsequently purified. We are looking for a strategic leader to bridge the gap between operational needs and technical automation excellence.

roles and responsibilities 

You will lead the creation of a 3-year strategic roadmap for process control (DeltaV) and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) capabilities.

This will involve:

  • Lead a thorough current-state assessment of DeltaV and MES usage across biotherapeutics operations.

  • Perform structured gap analyses comparing current state to the desired future state over a 3-year horizon.

  • Define a prioritized, costed roadmap for DeltaV and MES enhancements with milestones and resource estimates.

  • Create an operations capability build plan that identifies required people, training, and procedures.

  • Translate operational requirements into clear input for engineering, IT, and vendors.

  • Define key metrics and KPIs to measure roadmap delivery and system stability.


how to succeed 

You are a strategic thinker with a deep technical pulse on pharmaceutical manufacturing who can translate complex automation data into executive-ready strategies.

You will also bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, IT, or related field.

  • 5+ years’ experience in (bio)pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.

  • Hands-on exposure to process control systems (DCS) and MES.

  • Proven experience performing gap analyses and creating multi-year roadmaps.

  • Strong experience working in cGMP regulated environments.

  • Practical knowledge of DeltaV and ISA-95/88 standards.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

  • Formal training in Lean, Six Sigma, or PMP (Preferred).
