Communications Lead


Location: Remote, Ireland. Will require occasional travel to various locations including Limerick and Cork, roughly every 2-3 weeks with prior notice

Duration: 14 months, maternity cover starting October 1st

Hours: 39 per week, normal working hours

roles and responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading the planning and implementation of all external communications activities for Johnson & Johnson Campus Ireland providing strategic counsel and partnership to Site Leads. 

  • Responsible for developing and implementing a corporate communications strategy that grows Johnson & Johnson’s reputation in Ireland, leveraging corporate initiatives, assets and stakeholder partnerships where appropriate.

  • Identifies and harnesses opportunities to position Johnson & Johnson as a thought leader in areas aligned to the Campus Ireland Strategy.  

  • Ensuring close alignment with Campus Ireland Strategy team, Campus Ireland Leadership team, EMEA and Global Communication teams to ensure communication strategies fully align with business needs.  

  • Responsible for Crisis and Issues Management communications for the Campus Ireland 

  • Acting as first point of contact with media for enquiries relating to Johnson & Johnson Campus Ireland communications and working closely with the PR agency.

  • Ensure that oversight and communications expertise are provided during external events e.g. speaking opportunities for J&J leaders in Ireland, stakeholder outreach engagements e.g. trade associations, government officials etc. 

  • Build a strong understanding of J&J operations, capabilities and key strategic focus areas in Ireland to anticipate and respond to external events and to identify communications opportunities. 

  • Build excellent relationships with external partners involved in supporting Campus Ireland external communications. 

  • Provide regular status updates to Director of Strategy, J&J Campus Ireland.

  • Benchmark activity with appropriate metrics, KPIs and evaluate success as appropriate.

  • Management of the Campus Ireland communications budget.

  • Internal Communications 

  • Provide communications planning and delivery to support internal programmes; corporate initiatives, HR, D&I, CSR and wider cross-Campus communications.

  • Chair Campus Ireland Internal Communications Forum.

  • Strategic support and counsel to Site Communication teams. Communications support on key projects. 

  • Establish and foster good working relationships with the UK, EMEA, global and J&J cross-sector communications network.

  • Benchmark activity with appropriate metrics and evaluate success.


how to succeed

  • At least 8 years’ experience working in communications – agency; for a large corporate or public sector, preferably in healthcare. 

  • Degree level or equivalent qualification in communications or a related discipline. 

  • Strong technical competencies relevant to communications including devising strategies, accompanied by strong writing and verbal communications skills. 

  • Management of PR agencies and other external vendors.  

  • Experience of project management and managing budgets effectively.

  • Ability to translate complex scientific data into communications materials.

  • Issues management:  Ability to identify and mitigate reputational risk in relation to communications activity.

  • Experience of planning and delivering internal and external events.

  • Knowledge of new models of internal communication, including digital and strategic engagement.

  • Experience of social media channels, digital landscape and strategic external social media engagement.

  • Experience in benchmarking results and setting appropriate evaluation metrics.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels in the business. 

  • Demonstrate sensitivity and tact when dealing with confidential/sensitive information

  • Familiarity or experience working in large, complex corporate environments.

  • Experience of working in the pharmaceutical/med tech/healthcare sector though not essential, is highly desirable.

This role offers a very competitive hourly rate. This contract will run for a 14 month duration (maternity leave cover). This role is remote with occasional travel to various locations including Cork and Limerick
