MSAT Packaging Cold Chain CoE Engineer


Location: Remote working - up to 25% travel

We are accepting applications from the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands ONLY.

Duration: 12 months with good chance of extension 


MSAT Packaging CoE Team, as part Johnson and Johnson Innovative Medicines Supply Chain (JJIMSC), i is recruiting a Packaging Cold Chain Engineer that will work with cross functional teams to qualify the system solutions used for temperature control transportation for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), Drug Substances (DS), Drug Product (DP) and Finished Good (FG) for Janssen Supply Chain.

The MSAT Packaging CoE Engineer will also work to manage, develop, test, qualify and commercialize pharmaceutical and devices secondary package solutions for both new and existing products (including Combination Products) while working in compliance with relevant markets and industry standards as well as with JJIMSC guidelines, providing support to product physical protection and cold chain distribution testing, packaging line trials, packaging equipment/material qualifications.

The Packaging Engineer will support Transportation Study related activities for the supply chain: Physical/Simulated Distribution Testing and/or Temperature Control (Cold Chain) Qualification activities for API, DS; DP and FG.


how to succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or Equivalent Technical / Engineering discipline is required

  • A minimum of seven (3/5) years of related experience in cold chain, packaging, labeling, and manufacturing processes is required

  • Excellent knowledge of English language

  • Knowledge in the design, development, testing, qualification, and commercialization of Passive Solutions is required

  • Experience with secondary & tertiary packaging materials & designs is required.

  • Knowledge of packaging distribution / transportation testing (for cold chain & non- cold chain products) is required

  • Knowledge of packaging shipping route verification activities for cold chain & non- cold chain products is required

  • Validation / qualification of packaging equipment, material & processes is preferred.

  • Experience in the areas of pharma, chemical, biologics, medical device, or other regulated products areas is preferred

  • Knowledge of cGMP is required

  • Working familiarity with recycling packaging / shipping materials and design for the environment (Johnson & Johnson WW EHS Earthwards Tool) is preferred

  • Project management skills required

  • The ability to be effective in a global environment with the ability to manage and lead technical issues with Cross Functional global partners is required

  • Ability to lead and influence others in a complex matrix organization is preferred

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across all levels of the company, across the supply chain, deliver and with the commercial franchises as appropriate is preferred

  • Project Management (PMP), Lean Six Sigma, Process Excellence, FPX, and Kepner Tregoe Certifications are preferred

  • Lead / drive the following Transportation Study related activities for the supply chain: Physical/Simulated Distribution Testing and/or Temperature Control (Cold Chain) Qualification activities, as required.

  • Support Shipping Route verification (SRV) related activities, as required.

  • Provide support to product protection (physical and/or simulated) and cold chain distribution testing, packaging line trials, packaging equipment/material qualifications, child resistant requirements, human factor studies and patient centric design.

  • Support sustainability / environmentally friendly packaging initiatives as required.
