DePuy Synthes, a market-leading Medical Devices business within Johnson & Johnson, has an outstanding opportunity for a Project Engineer to join the PPD Engineering Group.

 

 

Role Summary: 

 

The position will involve overall responsibility for the development, growth and delivery of the ICE Portfolio of Projects within the PPD Engineering Group. These projects will involve the development and deployment of new products and process technologies to multiple manufacturing locations. Also, work to reduce the cost of our existing products through collaboration with R&D and development of next generation process technologies and capabilities.

 

 

Principal Accountabilities:

 

 

New Inspection Technologies

  • Investigate & suggest a pipeline of inspection technologies to be implemented in our manufacturing plants to dramatically improve product Inspection costs &/or efficiencies for new and existing products
  • Drives complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and/or scientific methods to broaden DePuy’s Intellectual Property in key strategic areas.
  • Identify inspection technologies, which will enable new and disruptive product designs by reducing process capability constraints.
  • Work with all value streams and plants WW to analyse rationale, investment requirements, development timing, market potential, and return on investment for all Inspection Technology Projects.
  • Oversee the specification and purchase of capital equipment during development ensuring balance between optimising technological capabilities and return on investment.
  • Own and manage the Projects from the WW Heat Map process relating to Inspection Technologies
  • Develop and Implement an ICE Strategy for the Cork site and for DePuy Globally
  • Manage and execute an ICE projects for DePuy Globally
  • Ensure Lean principles are embedded into the product and process development activities 
  • Interface and manage relationships with critical business stakeholders to ensure the successful adoption of Inspection technologies across the Business (Regulatory, Commercial, Design, Operations)
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of Inspection impact on product performance as perceived by the customer


 

Emerging Product Development

  • Manage operational and process development activities for the development of innovative processes that facilitate the manufacture of Convergent Technologies (API, Polymer, Biologic)
  • Manage operational and NPD requirements to facilitate the manufacture of Convergent Technologies within the DePuy and MD&D (where appropriate)
  • Participate and support the development of the Convergent Technology Centre of Excellence within the Innovation Centre
  • Identify and manage relationships with third party vendors that provide critical process and product development support


 

Operations Development

  • Identify and establish a research capability platform that will enable transformational changes in process capability at DePuy with particular focus on PAT, Automation and Inspection.
  • Support and drive the implementation Lean Equipment Design Methodologies within the Centre
  • Develop “Best in Class” implementation processes for Inspection Technologies
  • Lead the development and management of our scientific process understating approach to next generation convergent technology processes



 

Business Results

  • Is acknowledged as a subject matter expert in a relevant technical field and influences associated site-wide technology planning
  • Provides guidance to product and technology teams
  • Develop and grow the skills set within ICE to facilitate the provision of core technologies and knowledge to DePuy Globally and MD&D where appropriate
  • Implement Company Business Plan Objectives & strive to exceed Business results
  • Identify capital spend and budget requirements for Inspection Technology Projects
  • Ensure that ICE projects are run cost efficiently and deliver manufacturability and reliable products.
  • Promote a quality-focused culture within the manufacturing engineering team, ensuring adherence to cGMP and Quality Systems as defined in the Quality Manual
  • Provide timely and accurate central reporting on project activities to the project sponsors and senior management.

  • Is an influential team member, fully motivated to achieve and demonstrate best practices in line with the department and Site/Corporate objectives
  • Build and develop the skills set through the selection, recruitment and development of exceptional engineering talent, and the development of core technical skills and knowledge to support future growth

  • Implement Program and Project Management Best Practices within the ICE Group.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and a clear identifiable work ethos within ICE.


 

Complexity & Change

  • Performs pioneering engineering work as part of major programs
  • Develop and maintain an environment of continuous improvement and process excellence
  • Responsible for the management and justification of capital investment requirements in line with business growth
  • Successfully integrate new Inspection technologies and process into existing manufacturing operations ensuring good performance metrics and capacity planning
  • Manage the integration of Operational and R&D groups for the execution of complex technical projects
  • Implementation and adoption of QbD principles within ICE



 

Customer & Marketplace focus

  • Instil and maintain a sense of urgency and customer focus within the manufacturing engineering team.
  • Prioritise projects / tasks in line with Customer service requirements & strategy Engineering objectives.
  • Act as the voice of the customer. 



 

Collaboration & Teaming

  • Work with engineering managers WW to ensure consistency within the engineering function at a plant wide level.
  • Lead or actively participate in cross-functional teams to ensure New Product Introduction/Research and Development projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Develop collaborative networks with J&J Corporate Franchises

Qualifications and Experience:

 

 

Essential:

  • 3 to 5+ years previous engineering experience within a Medical Device manufacturing environment

 

 

Desirable 

  • Ph.D or equivalent experience
