Scientist MRI
Location: Beerse, Belgium
Duration: 12 months
Hours: 40
Imagine your next project joining an international and diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations to find innovative solutions for drug product development.
The Scientist will join the Advanced Material Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) group within AD. AMCI is an international and diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations for the commercial product portfolio and for the Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) organization of Janssen R&D.
The Advanced Molecular Analysis (AMA) team of AMCI is a group of analytical centers of excellence in structure elucidation (by high-resolution Mass Spectrometry, solution, solid-state NMR, and MRI), organic trace analysis, excipient & polymer characterization, and oligonucleotide & peptide analytics. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art analytical equipment, including a pre-clinical MRI, 600 MHz standard-bore NMR, and 500MHz wide-bore systems (also equipped with pre-clinical MRI options).
We are currently recruiting an enthusiastic, highly motivated Scientist to join our team! For this laboratory-based position you will work together with internal and external specialists in drug product development and analytical development teams to find innovative solutions for the development of MRI methods for active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), drug product in complex formulations and device functionality for drug-delivery systems. To meet the needs of a highly dynamic drug product environment, it would be advantageous if candidates had basic knowledge of solid-state NMR in addition to NMRI expertise.
roles and responsibilities
Develop and validate MRI methods for pharmaceutical materials, formulations, and dosage forms.
Establish MRI workflows complementary to CT scan analysis for typical pharmaceutical applications like water ingress and hydration kinetics in tablets, capsules, gels, and complex dosage forms to understand disintegration, swelling, diffusion, and dissolution-related mechanisms.
Establish MRI workflows complementary to CT scan analysis for coating and capsule performance, including assessment of coating integrity, permeability, delayed-release behaviour, capsule disintegration, and spatial heterogeneity of release-controlling films.
Establish MRI workflows complementary to CT scan analysis for device functionality for drug-delivery systems where MRI can support non-destructive visualization of internal movement, fluid distribution, filling/emptying behaviour, and functional performance under relevant test conditions.
Establish MRI workflows complementary to CT scan analysis for sedimentation and resuspendability of suspensions, depots, and dispersed systems by monitoring particle settling, phase separation, redistribution after agitation.
Translate imaging data into actionable formulation and process insights for project teams.
Support cross-functional studies involving formulation development, analytical development, material science, and product performance assessment.
Build internal expertise, standard operating procedures, and fit-for-purpose data interpretation practices for MRI-based characterization.
Potentially perform basic solid-state NMR experiments.
Maintain a safe work environment in compliance with all applicable environmental, health, regulatory requirements, GMP and safety regulations.
how to succeed
Required: a minimum of master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry or related field, with an affinity to complex instrumentation. A Ph.D. in one of these fields is advantageous, but not required.
Hands-on experience with pre-clinical MRI Instrumentation is highly preferred.
Experience with interpreting imaging and spectroscopic data and communicating results to a non-expert audience.
Experience with solid state NMR is a plus.
Knowledgeable in organic chemistry is a plus.
Fast learner with scientific curiosity, self-steering, pro-active, creative.
Open-minded, with the ability to work together as one team in a global environment.
Good written and spoken communication and presentation skills in English.
Efficient, flexible, dynamic, results and performance driven.
Sense of urgency.
