Imagine your next project, joining Janssen Sciences as their Senior Patient Engagement Manager. Joining the communications and public affairs departments, reporting into the Communications and public affairs lead. 

The Senior Patient Engagement Manager explores the patient group environment to develop and implement an insight-driven patient-engagement strategy for key therapeutic areas on behalf of Janssen that is highly impactful and measurable. 

Their purpose is to build patient and patient group knowledge, capabilities, and resources with a view to improving patient outcomes. 

The Senior Patient Engagement Manager acts as a strategic and trusted advisor to teams to strengthen Janssen’s patient focus by enhancing the way we interact with patients and patient organisations and further the establishment of meaningful partnerships.


roles and responsibilities

  • Devise and execute a patient group engagement strategy at a national level ensuring alignment with Janssen EMEA.

  • Lead on development and execution of patient centred projects campaigns, programmes, and initiatives. This should be done in close collaboration with the cross functional therapy area teams and will require strong internal working relationships.

  • Develop and maintain expertise in assigned therapy areas to understand the key issues associated with the disease and its treatment.

  • Develop strong relationships with local and national patient groups, representatives from patient groups, individual patients, where appropriate, and relevant Health Care Professionals, to establish the patient population's needs and build partnerships in the therapy area.

  • Collection of patient and patient group insights that are shared with business partners contributing to more patient focused strategies.

  • Integrate the patient as a key access stakeholder by working with market access colleagues to build access plans that engage with patients and patient groups early incorporating their insights into our strategy and empowering them to be active stakeholders in the reimbursement process for our products.

  • Support the elevation of the patient voice to ensure the reimbursement process at a policy level enables timely access to new and better medicines for patients.

  • Enable patients to manage their own disease by supporting the development of appropriate resources and also generating awareness of diseases among the public.

  • Disseminate approved educational and therapy area information or materials to appropriate patient groups and appropriate HCPs involved in the support of patient groups.

  • Facilitate patient voice earlier in the product lifecycle via patient councils, EMEA projects and R&D, where appropriate

  • Support internal communication around specific health awareness days/patient advocacy initiatives.

  • Act as point of contact to align with EMEA patient focused activities. Influence the EMEA plans in provision of appropriate activities for the local operating company to ensure that patient needs are being met.

  • Set and track KPIs for patient engagement; develop feedback systems to monitor the value and quality of materials, programmes, and activities for continued improvement in future activities.

Key compliance requirements 

  • Complete annual Drug Safety and HCC Awareness training.

  • Report Adverse Events and complaints in a timely way to Drug Safety according to current Adverse Event Reporting guidelines/SOP and to maintain Regulatory compliance

  • Acts in accordance with Johnson & Johnson HCC requirements if interacting with patient groups and Healthcare Professionals.

  • If commissioning contractors or third-party organisations, put contracts in place and provide training so that these individuals also act in accordance with Johnson & Johnson HCC requirements when interacting with Patient Groups and/or Healthcare Professionals and report adverse events and complaints (as above).

  • Comply with designated SOPs for therole.

  • IPHA code training to ensure all activities are in line with IPHA code of practice.


Resource Management

  • Control budget for patient-centred advocacy programmes.


Essential Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • A university degree in a related field, such as communications, public policy, or health care, is a distinct advantage.

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in communications and/or patient advocacy is required. The right mix of both communications and patient advocacy experience is desirable.

  • Proven business experience in the pharma sector is highly desirable.

  • Experience of project management and managing budgets effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to handle a complex, multiple-stakeholder environment externally.

  • High level of verbal and written communication skills.

  • Highly skilled in establishing and building networks.

  • A proven record of demonstrating strategic, creative thinking resulting in tangible business outcomes.

  • A team player with an ability to work collaboratively and establish positive working relationships with colleagues and as a member of IBTs within a matrix organisation.

  • Fluent in English with a broad knowledge and awareness of current affairs and health

  • Degree level or equivalent in communications; public affairs; science or rel
