The Innovative Medicine Biologics Leiden (IM leiden) Environmental Sustainability Officer works together with the site Environmental Sustainability Sponsor engaging with key stakeholders and peers to further develop the site Environmental Sustainability Strategy/Roadmap supporting delivery of Johnson and Johnson (JnJ) Climate Goals and site-specific initiatives across all relevant environmental sustainability areas. This strategy/roadmap will benefit human and environmental health and will drive changes on site to live into our aspiration of advancing health for everyone, everywhere.  The Environmental Sustainability Officer oversees the overall execution, mission, and efficacy of the site environmental sustainability program while ensuring it remains aligned with the Campus Netherlands and JnJ Corporate Environmental Sustainability strategies.


roles and responsibilities

  • Lead the IM Leiden Environmental Sustainability Roadmap team and the site WeSustain team, 

  • Assist in implementation of the company's health, safety, quality and environmental policy, procedures, and management systems as they relate to Environmental Sustainability. 

  • Further develop and advise on IM Leiden Environmental Sustainability Roadmap/Program and Environmental, Social Governance (ESG), aligned with JnJ, site goals, and campus Netherland goals.

  • Maintain, update, and communicateIM Leiden Sustainability procedures, support of ISO 14001 Standard Sustainability requirements. 

  • Monitor compliance of the IM Leiden organization in accordance with environmental sustainability guidelines and targets.

  • Draft and implement Environmental Sustainability specific procedures if required to support Environmental sustainability program. 

  • Further develop the site Sustainability roadmap, ensure progress in implementation, and identify required resources to deliver, through site budget and capital processes. 

  • Support existing IM Leiden Environmental Sustainability resources and initiatives (including Facilities, MAM and EHS teams). 

  • Define and track metrics for Environmental Sustainability in line with established ESG criteria and establish a site sustainability governance structure to properly support and prioritize sustainability initiatives across the site.

  • Coordinate all aspects of internal and external stakeholder communication around Environmental Sustainability.

  • Engage with Platform, and regional Sustainability SMEs and forums to advise site on development and focus areas.

  • Manage and liaise with all representative bodies, membership organization in relation to sustainability including appropriate awards and submissions. 

  • Produce periodic Environmental Sustainability updates to the site Environmental Sustainability steering team. Draft presentations, and proposals; presents proposals and recommendations.

  • Develop and execute a Environmental Sustainability Awareness program in conjunction with the site We Sustain team to ensure employee facing Environmental sustainability work is connected to J&J, platform and site goals and objectives.  

  • Evaluate efficacy of Environmental sustainability programs; recommend and implement improvements as necessary.

  • Consider environmental sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs.

  • Identify and facilitate training as needed.

  • Perform other related duties as required.


how to succeed

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in engineering, EHS or Sustainability is required. 

  • A minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of applicable experience within a large global and regulated organization is required. 

  • Knowledge on energy conservation, Environmental Sustainability programs, Carbon neutrality, Biodiversity, and waste reduction programs  

  • Experience working with cross-functional project and support teams, serving different employee populations.

  • Experience establishing and driving multifunctional programs and initiatives relating to Environmental Sustainability or Capital projects. 

  • Experience on Project Management

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills tailored to specific internal and external audiences.

  • Able to motivate others

  • Helicopter view and proactive stance

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Presentation and influencing skills required to deliver proposals to varying groups of individuals.



  • Good analytical and data management skills.

  • Thorough and current knowledge of Environmental sustainability practices, and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Ability to analyze and understand research and to identify relevant and valuable information.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • This role offers a very competitive hourly rate. 

  • This contract will run for a 12 month duration and has a strong chance of extension.
