Within Pharmaceutical Product Development & Supply (PPDS), the Parenterals & Liquids Development (PLD) department is at the forefront of innovation, developing groundbreaking Parenteral and Liquid drug product formulations and processes across our R&D Synthetics portfolio, from late Discovery to Commercialization.

This position offers a unique opportunity to combine hands-on scientific innovation with the application of modern digital and data science approaches within pharmaceutical development.

roles and responsibilities 

As a Formulation Scientist within this team, you will contribute to formulation development activities for state-of-the-art liquid oral and injectable formulations of small molecules in the (pre)clinical development stage.

This will involve:

  • Perform formulation and process development activities for innovative parenteral and liquid dosage forms across the R&D Synthetics portfolio.

  • Design and execute laboratory experiments to support formulation screening, process optimization, stability assessments, scale-up, and clinical development activities.

  • Analyze experimental results and translate findings into actionable development strategies.

  • Support generation of manufacturing instructions, master batch records, criticality assessments, and control strategies for clinical manufacturing.

  • Author technical reports, development summaries, and source documents supporting global regulatory submissions.

  • Collaborate with various internal partners in Drug Development such as Pharmaceutical & Material Sciences, Analytical Development, Quality, Legal, and Supply Chain, as well as external CDMOs.

  • Ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality documentation of experimental data in electronic laboratory notebooks and associated digital systems.

  • Support structured data capture and knowledge management through the use of ELN and other digital platforms (e.g., OneLab).

  • Partner with digital, data science, and informatics teams to evaluate and implement innovative digital solutions that enhance development efficiency.

  • Explore and leverage emerging technologies, including automation, modeling, visualization tools, and AI-enabled capabilities, to accelerate pharmaceutical development.


how to succeed 

You will bring a strong foundation in physical pharmacy and formulation design, paired with a collaborative spirit and an interest in pushing the boundaries of digital laboratory tools and data-driven decision-making.

You will also bring:

  • Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or related relevant scientific/technical field. Alternatively, a Master’s degree or BS/BA degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience in a relevant technical field.

  • Demonstrated experience in parenterals and liquids formulation and process development for synthetic drug compounds (small molecules) with a focus on long-acting / targeted release injectables.

  • Good understanding of physical pharmacy and particle engineering principles.

  • Ability to conduct hands-on experiments accurately and safely in a modern laboratory environment.

  • Experience in aseptic/sterile processes, milling and nanonization techniques, and lyophilization is desired.

  • A background in advanced drug delivery technologies such as drug nanosuspensions, biodegradable microspheres, injectable biodegradable rods, gels, liposomes is advantageous.

  • Scientific rigor and curiosity, innovation mentality, critical thinking capabilities, and problem-solving inclination.

  • Excellent teammate with strong oral and written communication skills who thrives in a collaborative environment.

  • Experience with digital laboratory platforms, data management systems, data visualization tools, and/or computational approaches supporting pharmaceutical development.
