Laboratory Automation Specialist


Location: Leiden (hybrid working) 


Hours: 40 hours, 12 months contract


Essential: GxP, GCLP,Tecan and Beckman liquid handlers - 5 years + pharmaceutical (experience of laboratory automation systems)



The Role:


Are you a multidisciplinary expert who excels at the intersection of laboratory science and automation? 


Do you have substantial experience in compliance (GxP/GCLP)? We are seeking a Laboratory Automation Specialist to design, implement, and maintain innovative automation solutions that transform complex manual laboratory processes into efficient automated workflows. 


This role encompasses lab science, automation, compliance, and lab management, presenting a truly unique and impactful opportunity.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Automated Method Development:

    • Collaborate with laboratory teams to translate manual lab workflows into efficient automated solutions, leveraging extensive experience in designing and programming protocols for robotics and liquid handling workstations (e.g., Tecan robots).

  • Automated Sample Testing Support:

    • Provide support during the execution of automated experiments, drawing upon a background in performance monitoring and troubleshooting at multiple levels.

  • System Integration and Development:

    • Configure and program robotic systems (e.g., Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman) and integrate scheduling software to optimize automation workflows, based on previous experience in high-throughput screening and drug target discovery.

  • Technical Support and Maintenance:

    • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain automated systems to ensure continuity and performance in production environments, using skills developed as an EHS representative overseeing safety and audits in BSL-2 laboratories.

  • Documentation and Validation:

    • Validate automated methods and maintain comprehensive documentation in alignment with internal and regulatory requirements, informed by years of experience in conducting GxP-compliant research.

  • Training and Communication:

    • Offer training to laboratory users and effectively communicate with stakeholders through reports, updates, and user support, fostering a collaborative environment among multidisciplinary teams.


Profile

  • Laboratory Automation Specialist: 

    • Skilled in the setup, use and maintenance of laboratory automation system in pharma/biotech laboratories.

    • Has excellent interpersonal skills to interact with automation users

  • Laboratory Specialist:

    • Empathetic and knowledgeable in laboratory techniques and workflows within a regulatory environment

  • Compliance Expert:

    • Capable of conceptualizing and implementing data exchange via networking and software tools, ensuring adherence to GCLP/GxP standards.



Qualifications:

  • A relevant B.Sc. degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a similar field, complemented by certifications in Good Laboratory Practice and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice.

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience programming Tecan and Beckman liquid handlers, with familiarity in robotic liquid handling systems and scheduling software.

  • Proven track record in managing automated systems, including overseeing maintenance, training users, creating and maintaining documentation, and enhancing compliance.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills, combined with a proactive, solution-driven mindset and creative problem-solving abilities.
