Johnson & Johnson
Scientist – Advanced Imaging and Analytics
Scientist – Advanced Imaging and Analytics
Location: Beerse, Belgium
Duration of the contract: 30/09/2027 (with possible extension)
Hours per week: 32 - 40 | Contract: Fixed-term Employee or Freelancer / B2B
Imagine your next project driving science-based advancements that save lives by uncovering the complex microstructure of the medicines of tomorrow.
The scientist will join the Advanced Materials Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) group within Analytical Development. AMCI is an international and diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations for the commercial product portfolio and for the Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) organization of J&J Innovative Medicine. You will work with data generated from a broad suite of imaging technologies, including X-ray Microscopy (XRM/XCT), MRI, Raman spectroscopy, Infrared (IR), Terahertz (THz) imaging, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Optical Microscopy.
roles and responsibilities
Your role is to be the scientist who takes complex datasets and unlocks their full analytical potential — through rigorous post-processing, intelligent segmentation, 3D reconstruction, morphological quantification, and meaningful visualization.
This will involve:
Lead post-processing and quantitative image analysis using Dragonfly or Avizo, including 3D reconstruction, segmentation, visualization, and feature extraction from complex, multi-modal imaging datasets
Develop and standardize reproducible image analysis workflows and pipelines that deliver consistent, high-quality analytical outputs
Interpret and communicate image analysis results with clear, data-driven insights that address product quality, microstructure, and performance questions
Support and participate in imaging experiments across XRM/XCT, MRI, Raman, IR, THz, SEM, and Optical Microscopy
Collaborate cross-functionally, presenting image analysis findings in team meetings and contributing to a culture of scientific innovation
Maintain analytical rigor in data handling, documentation, and reporting, ensuring compliance with laboratory and regulatory standards
Contribute to the development of new imaging and analysis strategies that advance the team's capabilities and scientific impact
how to succeed
Using Dragonfly or Avizo as your primary analytical environment, you will develop and refine image analysis workflows that answer critical questions about product quality, microstructure, performance, and failure mechanisms.
You will also bring:
Master's degree (MSc) or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field
Strong, demonstrated proficiency and direct hands-on experience in post-processing image analysis using Dragonfly or Avizo
Hands-on experience with 3D segmentation, volume rendering, porosity analysis, morphological quantification, or multi-channel data visualization
Demonstrated experience applying AI and machine learning models to image analysis tasks (e.g., U-Net, convolutional neural networks, noise reduction, automated feature detection)
Experience with AI toolsets embedded within Dragonfly or Avizo, or equivalent platforms such as ilastik, napari, or Python-based pipelines (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-image)
Some prior exposure to imaging techniques (XRM/XCT, MRI, SEM, or similar) is an advantage
Solid understanding of data quality principles, scientific documentation, and analytical reporting
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail
Fluent in English (spoken and written)
benefits
This role offers a very competitive hourly rate. This contract will run for until 30/09/2027 with a possible extension.
