Scientist in vivo Interventional Oncology


Location: Beerse

Duration: 12 months

Hours: 40 hours per week. May require some evening and weekends (4-8 weekends a year)

Interventional Oncology, is a cross-sector initiative, charged by the Executive Committee of J&J to alter the course of lung cancer and improving survival by intercepting and curing lung cancer.


We are seeking for highly motivated Scientist to complement our Discovery Biology team at Beerse, Belgium.  The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team of scientists in exploratory immuno-oncology, playing a key role in the evaluation and understanding of new drug concepts in vitro and in vivo. They will work in new target discovery for lung cancer therapy in order to support and expand the LCI portfolio. 


The role may also include support of lab based immunological experiments to support the validation of targets in parallel with assay development and the supervision of lab-based staff involved in supporting the pre-clinical assay development. In addition, responsibilities could also include designing, implementing, monitoring and analyzing in vivo experimental work conducted internally or externally at contract research organizations.  The role will also require the analysis and presentation of the output of this work to the Pharmaceutical sciences group and Solution development teams within the INTO to support the clinical progression of targets.


roles and responsibilities

  • Execute immune based assay development to support pre-clinical drug development projects, in particular utilizing cancer cell, myeloid and T-cell based co-cultures.

  • Design and conduct novel research to support target validation of current and future targets in the INTO.  Support biology of project teams as core member.

  • Supervision of lab-based associate scientist level colleagues to support their pre-clinical validation experiments and career development.

  • Support pre-clinical in vivo work including design and execution of in vivo experiments, monitoring progress, analysis of results and presentation to INTO leadership teams.

  • Support pre-clinical and clinical project team and solution development teams in presentation and explanation of impact of pre-clinical data packages.

  • Support collaborations with academic investigators including advising on experimentation, analysis of results and conducting complementary experimentation.


how to succeed

You will be passionate and will have a genuine interest in helping improve lives and find a cure for lung cancer! You will also have a drive to grow and learn. You will also bring:

  • A minimum of a PhD degree in Life Sciences (Pharmacology, Immunology or Oncology) with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant laboratory-based experience in industry/biotech or an academic setting is required. OR a Master’s degree (M.S.) with relevant pharmaceutical or biotech industry/ lab/ academic experience is required.

  • Experienced with animal handling in oncology-relevant rodent models such as subcutaneous and orthotopic tumor implantation techniques and dosing, proper handling of therapeutics, tumor measurement, health monitoring, and data collection and analysis required.

  • Experience with the adherence to animal welfare and compliance regulations is required.

  • Drug administration by subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intravenous tail vein injections and oral gavage. Blood collection by tail vein, saphenous vein and cardiac puncture. Perform animal autopsy/dissection and microsurgery, perfusion and tissue collection.

  • Experienced with cell culture of cancer or immune cells required

  • Experienced with bioluminescent imaging, flow cytometry, IHC, ELISA is required.

  • This position may require occasional weekend, evening, and holiday dosing/animal monitoring.
