Aim of the position - Main Responsibilities

The (Senior) scientist will join the Advanced Material Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) group within AD. AMCI is an international and diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations for the commercial product portfolio and for the Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) organization of Janssen R&D. 

The AMCI group consists of different analytical centers of excellence such as primary packaging and combination products, colloidal sciences, rheology, particle identification, particle and powder characterization, metal testing, NMR, excipient & polymer characterization, and oligonucleotide & peptide analytics. 

Who we are looking for

We are currently looking for a highly motivated (Senior) scientist to join our investigations team. For this laboratory-based position, the scientist will mainly work on X-ray microscopy/tomography whilst also exploring other microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, such as SEM, IR/Raman, etc. for root cause analyses in scope of investigations and characterization of drug products, drug substances, excipients and packaging materials. 

The position is based in Beerse, Belgium.

Tasks and Responsibilities: 

  • Define X-ray microscopy/micro-CT sample preparation options, measuring workflows, and corresponding 3D image analysis solutions (including machine learning) for different type of samples and research questions.

  • Perform microscopic and spectroscopic analyses on particulate matter in view of root cause investigations.

  • Apply state-of–the art scientific knowledge to ensure high quality of the delivered results.

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and show ability to learn and explore new techniques.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, GMP and safety.

  • Stay up to date with the scientific literature in the pharmaceutical analysis field.


how to succeed

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. or Masters (with 2-3 years of (industry) experience), preferably in Mechanical/Chemical engineering/Material Science/Physics/Analytical chemistry or other related fields.

  • Prior experience in using microscopy (optical/SEM) techniques and X-ray microscopy/micro-CT is an advantage.

  • Expertise in (advanced) image analysis of 2D or 3D image datasets.

  • Preferably experience in using 3D image analysis software packages (i.e. ImageJ, Dragonfly, Avizo, Matlab).

  • Knowledge of Python programming language is a plus.

  • Knowledge of IR and Raman spectroscopy is a plus.
