Senior Scientist – Particle Identification and Investigations

Location: Beerse

Working mode: On-site Mon-Fri

Duration: 12 months

Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week

The scientist will join the Advanced Materials Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) group within Analytical Development. AMCI is an international and diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations for the commercial product portfolio and for the Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) organization of J&J Innovative Medicine. The group consists of three analytical centres of excellence, Advanced Molecular Analysis (AMA), Colloidal and Particulate Sciences (CPS) and Imaging, Machine learning, Particle identification, Combinational products and Technologies (IMPACT).

Join our particle identification and investigations sub-team as a highly motivated (senior) scientist. For this laboratory-based position, the scientist will mainly work with a wide range of imaging and spectroscopic techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM-EDX, XCT, IR and/or Raman microscopy to support root cause analyses in scope of investigations for drug products, drug substances, excipients, packaging materials and combinational products.

The position is based in Beerse, Belgium.

  • Identification of unknown particles/materials through a range of imaging and spectroscopic techniques (e.g. optical microscopy, SEM-EDX, IR microscopy, Raman microscopy, XCT). 

  • Applying state-of–the art scientific knowledge to ensure high quality of the delivered results.

  • Working in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and show ability to learn and explore new techniques.

  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, GMP and safety.

  • Staying up to date with the scientific literature in the field of pharmaceutical analysis.


how to succeed

Education & Experience

  • Masters (with 2-3 years of (industry) experience) or Ph.D. in Analytical chemistry/Chemical engineering/Material Science/Physics or other related fields.

  • Prior knowledge/hands-on experience with IR and/or Raman spectroscopy is a plus.

  • Familiarity with imaging techniques such as SEM-EDX, optical microscopy or XCT.

  • Experience with working in analytical laboratories and familiarity with good manufacturing practices is a plus.
