Medical Scientific Liaison


Location: Field based role - North Netherlands

Duration: 6 months

Hours: 40 per week


The role of a Medical Scientific Liaison (MSL) is to be a therapeutic area scientific expert, responsible for discussing our products, providing fair balanced, objective, scientific information and education to healthcare professionals (HCPs) on a peer-to-peer basis and to internal partners, as required by scientific and business needs. The MSL is accountable for the execution of the activities described in the country-specific Medical Affairs (MAF) tactical plan. 


Through strategic and key stakeholder engagement, the MSL is responsible for building and maintaining external relationships and represents the primary MAF contact. In addition, MSLs will have the responsibility to capture external insights and use these insights to inform the medical affairs/CVT strategy. The MSL will interact extensively and collaborate closely with the Medical Advisor. The MSL role has a predominantly external/field focus.


Place in the organisation  

The Medical Scientific Liaison reports to the Medical Therapeutic Area Lead (MTAL) of the assigned therapeutic area. The MTAL provides functional line management to MSLs including setting objectives, coaching and performance review.


Responsibilities:

Therapeutic area scientific expert: 

  • Serve as resource for scientific information, clinical research activity, healthcare landscape and emerging scientific trends within therapeutic area, with demonstration of continuously updated knowledge in these key areas 

  • Represent the primary MAF contact for stakeholders and is considered and recognized as trusted scientific partner and a reliable collaborative partner while building positive reputation of the company

  • Ensure understanding of current scientific landscape through self-driven learnings and internal/external trainings 


Stakeholder management:

  • Provide input to the Medical Advisor for stakeholder mapping and execute the MAF tactical plan in close collaboration with internal partners 

  • Execute impactful customer interactions driving scientific alignment 

  • Be recognized by stakeholder as the single-point-of-contact at Janssen and within the industry for scientific exchange (data generation, treatment paradigm, etc...) 

  • Collect and log medical / clinical insights from the field thereby developing a deep understanding of the treatment landscape and healthcare environment

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other customer facing roles and be a proactive member of the regional account teams, contributing to the creation and execution of the integrated account plan


Data/information generation activities:

  • Collaborate with GCO and clinical research organizations (CROs) in feasibility, PI/ site selection, management, and issue resolution for R&D clinical trials and MAF studies as appropriate 

  • Support the execution of market access activities and Real World Data studies/projects 

  • Lead the customer interaction communication for customer support requests (educational grants, quality improvement grants, investigator-initiated studies, etc) and ensure appropriate and timely internal discussions for follow-up 

  • Perform field/customer implementation of expanded access programs and risk management programs 


Data/information dissemination activities: 

  • Proactively communicate relevant scientific information in accordance with healthcare compliance guidelines 

  • Respond to unsolicited scientific queries from customers for approved products and products/indications in development, based on Medical Affairs and Medical Information documents 

  • Use digital technologies and new media to support compliant proactive and reactive communication 

  • Provide impactful external presentations in line with the medical affairs tactical plan 

  • Co-organize medical education programs with scientific third parties (collaborating with Medical Education Steering Committees (MESC)) to fill identified educational gaps and opportunities 


Compliance and Accountability:

  • Ensure all activities and interactions are executed in line with the legal framework and the Health Care Business Integrity guidelines and procedures 

  • Ensure safety reporting requirements (timely AE/PQC reporting) as set out in company policies and SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) are met 

  • Ensure company policies and procedures are fully understood and followed in all aspects of the role

  • Demonstrate effective time management and planning with willingness to incorporate feedback as necessary to ensure appropriate prioritization 

  • Complete all training, documentation and administrative requirements in a timely, accurate and compliant manner

  • Actively work on own development to further grow and develop professionally 


BIG registration

This section is only applicable to employees trained as physician which are registered in the Dutch BIG register. Employees trained as physician should be registered in the BIG register and need to make sure that their license is renewed every 5 years in line with the requirements of the Dutch government/BIG register. Janssen facilitates an average of 8 hours a week of individual patient care or equivalent activities to meet these requirements. The following tasks classify as execution of “individuele gezondheidszorg”, in line with the obligation set by the ministry of Health for qualification for the Dutch BIG register.


Profile / qualifications

The following qualifications for the function of Medical Scientific Liaison are required: 

  • Scientific degree: medical doctor, pharmacist or degree in biomedical/scientific sciences (with MD/PhD being an additional asset) 

  • Languages: Dutch & English

  • Integrity mindset, adhering to J&J Credo values, regulations and HCBI guidelines 


For the function of Medical Scientific Liaison, the following competencies are of high importance: 

  • Strong communication skills and ability to discuss data (e.g. study results) with HCPs on a peer-to-peer level 

  • Ability to build professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders 

  • Understanding of scientific research, clinical trial design/conduct and interpretation of medical/scientific data (scientific acumen) 

  • Ability to work with clinical & scientific data in order to translate these into relevant information for the clinical practice of the HCP and patients (clinical acumen) 

  • Strong collaborative skills and team player mindset 

  • Strong customer focus with ‘can do’ attitude and driven by execution 

  • Ability to focus and prioritize when needed 


For the function of Medical Scientific Liaison, the following competencies are preferred or constitute additional assets: 

  • Strategic acumen: link medical/scientific information with clinical practice in order to create insights and inform medical affairs/CVT strategy 

  • Deepened clinical acumen: clinical knowledge and ability to understand and map clinical practice and resulting patient pathways 

  • Broad therapeutic area knowledge (beyond indication of use of Janssen medicine) 

  • Experience in multiple therapeutic areas 

  • Understanding of hospital environment (e.g. financing mechanisms, decision-making governance and dynamics)
