Senior Communications Manager


Location: Dublin, Ireland - hybrid working

Duration: 15 months (mat cover contract)

Hours: 40 hours per week


Imagine your next project, joining Janssen Sciences as their Senior Communications Manager! The purpose of this role is to plan and deliver strategic communications on behalf of Janssen Sciences Ireland, with a sharp focus on driving awareness for key Therapeutic Areas, external corporate positioning and internal communications engagement to meet the needs of the business.


Role and responsibilities:

Therapy Area (TA) Communications 

  • Responsible for leading the planning and implementation of product and therapy area communications strategies and activities (proactive and reactive) providing strategic counsel and partnership with the Integrated Brand Teams (IBTs). 

  • Building and strengthening relationships with media; patient advocacy groups (in collaboration with the Senior Patient Engagement Manager); and other partners.

  • Supporting disease awareness campaigns and partnership projects in partnership with the Senior Patient Engagement Manager, as required.

  • Ensuring close alignment with IBTs, Commercial Leads and Business Unit Directors, the wider CPA team and the Janssen Commercial Irish Leadership team (ILT) ILT to ensure brand communications strategies fully align with business needs. Close alignment with the EMEA CPA team to ensure alignment with EMEA communications strategy. 

  • Acting as first point of contact with media for enquiries relating to brand and/or Therapy Area communications and working closely with the PR agency.

  • Building a strong environmental understanding on Therapy area-related external developments, including media monitoring.

  • Providing regular status updates to the Communications & Public Affairs Lead.


Internal Communications 

  • Support internal company communications on behalf of the Irish Leadership Team (ILT), and the planning and delivery of employee conferences from a content perspective.  Identify opportunities to address feedback and strengthen alignment.

  • Lead all aspects of day-to-day employee communications, including overseeing townhalls, management messages, announcements, and content calendars for internal social channels (Viva Engage). 

  • Provide communications planning and delivery to support internal programmes; including corporate initiatives and CSR, as required.

  • Establish and foster good working relationships with the UK, EMEA, global and J&J cross-sector communications network, and be an active member of the EMEA communications group.

  • Benchmark activity with appropriate metrics and evaluate success.


Corporate Communications 

  • Develop and implement a corporate communications strategy that grows Janssen’s reputation in Ireland, leveraging corporate initiatives, assets and stakeholder partnerships where appropriate.

  • Manages branding collateral that builds and effectively articulates the corporate brand.  

  • Identifies and harnesses opportunities to position Janssen as a thought leader that aligns with our brand working closely with CPA colleagues and other colleagues such as Government Affairs/Market Access.  

  • Foster relationships with media and other relevant external stakeholders to grow the profile and reputation of Janssen in Ireland, leveraging the rebranding being rolled out.

  • Act as the designated media contact for proactive and reactive communications/issues management.

  • Monitor external developments and provide insights to business partners.  Support senior leadership with external communications on corporate matters through strategic counsel and briefings as appropriate.

  • Benchmark activity with appropriate metrics and evaluate success as appropriate.

  • Collaborate with the Social and Digital Communications Specialist.  Input into the social & digital media strategy to fully connect with the therapy area and corporate communications strategies. Sign off on weekly compliance requirements. 

  • In the event of the Crisis Management Team being required for Janssen Sciences Ireland, participate on the team as a key member. 


Key Compliance Requirements

  • Ensure safety reporting requirements (timely Adverse Event (AE)/ Product Quality Compliance (PQC reporting) as set out in company policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are met and appropriately managed when planning projects, developing materials, executing projects and contracting vendors.

  • Ensure Healthcare Compliance (HCC) and legal requirements (Fair Market Value, Transfer of Value rules, Promotional Materials rules) are fully understood, appropriately managed and complied with when planning projects, developing materials, executing projects and contracting vendors.

  • Ensure inspection readiness with respect to personal training compliance, and availability of recent CV and individualised Job Description.

  • If commissioning contractors or third-party organisations, put contracts in place and provide training so that these individuals also act in accordance with Johnson & Johnson HCC requirements when interacting with Healthcare Professionals and report Adverse Events and complaints (as above).

  • Act in accordance with IPHA Code of Practice 

  • Complete annual Drug Safety, IPHA and HCC Awareness training 

  • Comply with designated SOPs for the role.


Resource Management

  • Management of communications budgets across therapy area, internal and corporate communications. 



How to succeed:

Essential technical knowledge, skills and experience

  • At least 8 years’ experience working in communications – agency; for a large corporate or public sector, preferably in healthcare.  

  • Strong technical competencies relevant to communications including devising strategies, accompanied by strong writing and verbal communications skills. 

  • Management of PR agencies and other external vendors.  

  • Experience of project management and managing budgets effectively.

  • Ability to translate complex scientific data into communications materials.

  • Good understanding of the IPHA Code of Practice is desirable.

  • Issues management:  Ability to identify and mitigate reputational risk in relation to communications activity.

  • Experience of planning and delivering internal and external events.

  • Knowledge of new models of internal communication, including digital and strategic engagement.

  • Experience of social media channels, digital landscape and strategic external social media engagement.

  • Experience in benchmarking results and setting appropriate evaluation metrics.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels in the business. 

  • Demonstrate sensitivity and tact when dealing with confidential/sensitive information

  • Familiarity or experience working in large, complex corporate environments.

  • Experience of working in the pharmaceutical/med tech/healthcare sector though not essential, is highly desirable.


Qualifications

  • Degree level or equivalent qualification in communications or a related discipline.
